Afterwards, a follow-up appointment was necessary for your dentist to place the crown. And if it didn't fit correctly, the entire process started all over again. 
Thankfully, modern technology has made it possible to streamline the process. Instead of a two-week timeframe, in about one hour you can have your new permanent crown placed in your mouth.
